The 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards gala takes place on Saturday, December 1 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec (Hull). The event begins at 7:00 pm (local time).

The hosts for the upcoming 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards are CBC’s one-and-only Shelagh Rogers and Québec trad stepdancer-caller-musician Benoit Bourque, a former CFMA winner himself. They’ll be providing gala-goers with an entertaining and bilingual presentation of the night’s events, which includes the awards themselves plus live performances by Ron Hynes, Vishten, Ian Tamblyn, Florent Vollant, Galitcha, Sylvia Tyson, The Duhks and T. Il y a plusieurs façons de jouer sa propre tradition. Celle qui dépouille pour recouvrer un os immémorial. Celle qui harmonise pour fonder un nouveau classicisme du genre. Celle qui y colle avec plus ou moins de bonheur les influences confuses d'une culture multiforme et immature. Celle qui dépote à l'instinct en un véritable discours ce qui est de soi sans question. Et celle qui a tout compris, étymologiquement. Katé-Mé en est plutôt à cette étape dernière. Non ultime si l'on en juge l'évolution permanente. Le 3e CD sorti en avril 2006 sonne le glas des certitudes pour les esprits à tiroirs, qu'ils soient archivistes frileux ou étiquetteurs de marchandise. (...)

Après deux CD déjà bien remarqués, c'est un normal chiffre trois qui consacre une machine maintenant très bien réglée et en perpétuelle évolution, de concert en concert. Le n°1 marquait l'intrusion de la musique de haute Bretagne dans une perspective évolutive, encore en recherche mais déjà remarquable. Le n°2 une mayonnaise qui prend enfin, émulsion légère parce que « maison ». Ce dernier est le résultat d'une mâturation qui ne demande qu'à porter encore d'autres fruits. Mais déjà si rockailleusement goûteux... (...)

Sans vouloir obéir aux purismes des genres invoqués, mais créer comme ça vient sans rien renier ni pervertir, les Katé-Mé composent paroles et musiques, causent de misère sociale, de bureaux de poste qui ferment, de petits doigts qui chatouillent, de papillons qui survolent le monde sans se prendre pour « big brother », et font l'hymne à la joie « disco » du rond dansé comme un partage. Quasi révolutionnaire en ces temps d'isolement rentable. Katé-Mé est dans ce train qui marche, un transsibérien zapatiste qui fait fondre les glaces stylistiques, fait craquer les barrières de certitudes et ouvre les oeillères acoustiques. (...)

De l'exotisme non déroutant pour un éventuel public figé sur ce que doit être la zic breizhoue. Et du réel plaisir pour celui qui se laisse embarquer. Katé en gallo : « avec moi ». Une idée originelle de partage interne qui ne demande qu'à offrir ses passions et sa conviction. On peut dire maintenant « Avec eux ! ». Leur générosité n'attend que ça.

Depois de um ano bastante internacional e já com uma digressão prevista para Alemanha e Suíça e outra para Itália em 2008, os Dazkarieh fecham 2007 com um concerto no dia 24 de Novembro no Festival Musidanças, a decorrer no Instituto Franco-Portugais em Lisboa. A 1ª parte fica a cargo do brasileiro Fernando Terra e os bilhetes são a 10 Euros. O início do concerto está previsto para as 22h.

CIBL a deux émissions consacrées à la musique traditionnelle qui en plus de faire jouer cette musique, annoncent lancements, spectacles etc. De plus, cette semaine, pas moins de trois artistes traditionnels ont une chanson au palmares francophone (Yves Lambert, Vent du Nord, Eric & Simon Beaudry), ce qui signifie qu'elles jouent en dehors de ces émissions spécialisées.

Born in Québec City, fiddler-singer-mandolinist-guitarist Claude Méthé has been a part of the traditional music world in Québec for more than twenty years. A self-taught fiddler, his style reflects his influences and the eighteen years he lived in the region of Lotbinière, Québec, on the south side of the St-Lawrence river not far from Québec City. Claude is a former founding member of the nearly legendary Le Rêve du Diable, winner of a Felix for best traditional album in 1983, and a group often credited with singlehandedly reviving public interest in traditional Québécois music. The group’s original recordings have recently been rereleased and it is interesting to note that today, a whole new generation is once again making this “discovery”—in the form of old albums (33s) by Le Rève du Diable! In addition, Claude is a former member of Joséphine (with Danielle Martineau), Québec group Manigance and Vermont group Jeter le Pont. He has played all over Canada, in Europe and the U.S. and appears on at least twelve recordings, including the soundtrack of Oscar-winning film “CRAC” by Frédéric Back. Claude’s impressive repertoire of traditional songs contains gems from Manitoba, Ontario, Québec and the maritimes, sung in a voice both textured and sentimental. Tonight, Claude (fiddle, guitar, tunes and songs), will be accompanied by Dana Whittle (Jeter le Pont, Dent-de-lion, on guitar, feet and vocals) and Denise Levac (flute, vocals & feet).

Thanks for all the messages on the Still Breathing post I added here sometime ago. I really enjoy that album and it was nice to discover more materials on the subject. Besides that, thanks for the kind messages related to the situation of the wildfires in California. Things are getting better now although there is still fire and some regions are still under alert and risk. I hope everyone is safe and that relief comes soon.

THE SCHEDULE

Sat. November 3
Gather at The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver for check-in, followed by a kickoff concert at Capilano College in North Vancouver.

Sun. November 4
The day is free for sightseeing; gather mid-afternoon at Via Rail depot. Depart Vancouver 5:30 pm. Dinner on board as we enter the awesome Fraser River Canyon. 8:30 pm - Midnight: Evening Concert on board.

Mon. November 5
Wake up to some of the most magnificent scenery in the world! We'll pass Mt. Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, wend our way through Yellowhead (Tete Jaune) Pass and descend into the mountain town of Jasper at 11am (MT). We depart at 12:20, allowing for plenty of mountain air and leg- stretching. Workshops through the afternoon. In late afternoon we arrive in Edmonton, with a chance to stretch our legs, then we're off again. Starting at 8:30pm as we roll across the prairies, through small towns like Biggar and Viking, we'll be rocking and reeling till midnight in the performance car.

Tue. November 6
Across the prairies and Into Winnipeg at 11:20am (CT), where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet at "The Forks;" depart 12:25pm. The afternoon is filled with workshops, and, as evening falls, we enter the land of 1,000 lakes and the Canadian shield - some of the oldest rock and landscape on earth - over a thousand miles of nearly uninhabited terrain. This night on board features a full compliment of music and song!

Wed. November 7
Morning through the Shield, then into the small railroad town of Capreol for a leg-stretching just after noon. Our final afternoon on board brings us a last round of workshops and shows. We'll have an early dinner as we near Toronto, then, at 8:00pm, we pull into Union Station and cross the street to check in to the magnificent Fairmont Royal York, recently voted Canada's best deluxe hotel.

Thurs. November 8
Time to head home, or (optionally) stay another night for a possible Alasdair Fraser concert in Toronto (details tba). Special ticket price and additional hotel nights available.

Hello, everyone!

If you are in Toronto or in the area, Genticorum will be playing at Hugh's Room on November 8th. This is the final concert of Alasdair Fraser's Fiddle Train, which is travelling from Vancouver to Toronto during the first week of November. The concert at Hugh's Room is the final of the train experience -[which included five days of concerts and workshops]. Genticorum headlines the first half of the show, followed by Alasdair Fraser with Natalie Haas.

It's a pity I won't be there for this concert but I can tell you all that is so worth it! Last September, Alasdair and Natalie were here in Costa Mesa (CA), performing at the Orange County Performing Arts Center and both concerts were great!

Hello, everyone!

I'm very curious about my readers that have an interest on the movie Still Breathing. One review once said: "the notion of Still Breathing is sweet and lovely, and possesses moments of breathtaking beauty -- Fletcher turning a projector on Roz, using her skin as a sensuous, reflective screen; a miniature cairn constructed in the palm of a hand; Ida playing an easy, affectionate Chopin on her tuba. Adding to the charm is a marvelous and evocative soundtrack that completes rather than overwhelms the images. The picture has the power to enchant, but...", and here I leave to you all. This is one of my favorite movies and it's not perfect, but very entertaining. And, of course, I simply love the soundtrack that is great but not easily available at this point in time.

This isn't a well-known movie, even in US. Indeed, I know few people that saw it and have an idea of what I'm talking about but I know many of you out there has an interest on it. So, please, tell me what is it about this movie that you like? Is it about the soundtrack? Do you have it? Some of you stopped by my blog because of the lyrics I added of one of the songs of the movie, and I appreciate the emails. Now, I want everybody else to express their comments, ideas, interest and questions on the subject. Use the comments space here or send me an email.

In my case, one of the stories in the movie that I love the most is the local legend about La Ventana de Rosa (the Rose Window), at the Mission San José in San Antonio. If you go to San Antonio, I really recommend it.
