Hello everyone,

Sibiel is a Paris-based trio featuring the cello of Jean-Philippe Feiss. They are a wonderful mixture of early jazz ala Django Reinhardt and Eastern European gypsy music. The group takes its name from a Romnanian town where they claim "the adventure began." These guys are wonderful.

Anna Stafford is a violinist out of Pasadena. Unlike many rock violinists, she does not simply solo over a bass-and-drums rhythm section - these rhythm duties are handled by cellist John Krovoza. Aggressive, melodic, and full of that arco scratch I love so well. We'll be hearing much more from her in the future, I'm certain.

Colin Greenlaw is a jazz violinist currently based in Boston. I had a difficult time picking which tune of his to use - his stylings are so disparate, it's harder with him than most to capture "what he does" in just one tune. This piece "Pistachio Ranger" has an exotic feel that I enjoy very much, though other tunes incorporate distortion and electronica. A demo of his work will be made available very soon.

And finishing off the show is Parham Nassehpoor, an Iranian national currently living in Germany. Parham is a performer on the Kamanche, a traditional fiddle out of the Persian tradition. I actually ran across Parham in the Yahoo Fiddle-Crazy forum. YOu can read about this instrument and see videos from some of the Kamanche masters of the early 20th century
at this URL. A fascinating tradition.

Hello, everyone!

I'm back from Canada, more precisely from Québec. I love Montreal! My friend Courtney and I were visiting Québec to meet with other friends and also to go to the festival Chants de Vielles - a fest on musique traditionnelle quebecoise that was held in Calixa-Lavallée, QC, from Sept. 7th till 9th. Since 2005, when I've met Benoit Bourque and the Quebecois band Le Vent du Nord, I'm in love with the infectious dance rhythm of this style of music! Exciting, danceable, exquisitely music composed about 200 years ago or more, that get a brand new interpretation in the hands of these talented modern musicians.

Everybody participating in the festival was a musician or someone that appreciates the Quebecois Traditional Music (QueTrad). The festival Chef Jocelyn Thouin (photo) is a poet that already published his works many times, and participated in many shows of poetry, improvisation and music. The accessibility of the artists is a common fact when it's about QueTrad, and the sense of collaboration and team-work helps create a family-friendly environment where friendship and the love for the music prevail.

I didn't attend all the shows and I didn't camp in the site of the festival, but I had a lot of fun during this trip. The talents that surprised and impressed me out there are Canadian artist Tobie Miller (voice and vielle à roue) and French artist Baptiste Romain (fiddle, bagpipes, vièle à archet). And I'm not a big fan of bagpipes, mind you. Tobie has a very well-trained voice and no mistakes were made in any of the shows. One of the songs she did that reminded me of my singing times back 10 years ago is Tumbalalaika that you can hear in her MySpace. I added the lyrics below in an earlier entry. This morning, I managed to get the parts of the song and work on the arrangement. I did the singing but am trying to play it in the violin. Singing and playing the violin at the same time don't seem to work quite well... :-D

Also, during the festival, I had the opportunity to meet with Yann Falquet from the Quebecois band Genticorum. Yann is one of the coolest guys I've met in this medium. We did an interview months ago for my other blog. It was nice to see him around although he wasn't performing. He introduced me to Marc Benoît that was a member of the former band Éritage, famous during the 70's to the point of having their own TV show. It was nice to meet him since I'm after some rare albums of that decade and he gave many interesting tips of where to get them, besides new references to other Quebecois artists.

Bernard Simard, former La Boutine Souriante and Le Vent du Nord, also performed this past weekend. In my opinion, Simard knows a lot about playing the guitar and I had the chance to listen to him playing some different tunes. His last work, Spectacle Solo, is a very interesting work - worth to check it.

In resume, I had a lot of fun during this fest and a nice rest away from all the stress of the work... I couldn't ask for anything else. Well, maybe a week more...

Le FIAT existe depuis 1991. Il est le seul événement de la région de Québec à présenter un contenu entièrement axé sur la culture traditionnelle d’ici et d’ailleurs. The sounds of Bluegrass, Dixieland, old time mountain picking, and the strains of ethnic dance tunes from all over the world will flow from Boarding House Park in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Saturday, September 8, 2007, during the Banjo and Fiddle Contests. The public is invited to a full day of music, food and family fun. The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Workshops on Mountain Dulcimer, Oldtime Fiddle, Oldtime Banjo, Twin and Bluegrass Fiddle, and Bluegrass Banjo begin at 10:00 a.m.

The contests begin at noon and continue throughout the afternoon. Preregistration for contestants is suggested. A printable Contestant Registration Form is available.

Banjo and fiddle players of all ages, experts and beginners alike, compete for cash prizes and trophies in this annual competition. Participants have ranged in age from four years to seventy-five, many traveling from as far away as North Carolina, and Quebec. Musicians interested in participating should preregister by contacting the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center:

My dear friend Benoit Bourque, that will be from tomorrow till Monday (27th) in Ontario for The Woods Music And Dance Camp, was reminding me the other day about the Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon.

In Brazil (where I'm originally from), we have many musical styles that explore the sonority of the accordion... In the Northeast for example, the accordion, along with the triangle and the zabumba, is the main instrument used in forró, a traditional style usually played by trios. The Brazilian accordion (named sanfona) is related to the English concertina. It arrived in Brazil - where the eight bass bellows was popular in the Northeast - with Italian and German immigrants.

Now, during the Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon, that will be held in Montmagny (QC) from August 30th to September 3rd, many other styles such as Quebecois Traditional Music, Jazz, Manouche, etc, will be presented showing the versatility of this instrument and the talents of many artists from around the world.

It will be five intense days of festivities: "The Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon is a beautiful harmony of cultures where different styles, genres and repertoires unite to form a magical song for a public of all ages. Montmagny (Québec) has been a proud host of this event since its creation in 1989."

Just a note of information on an upcoming festival (FREE) here in East Lansing, Michigan for those folks anywhere in the area. The Great Lakes Folk Festival will have it's 6th year Aug. 10-12.

It's a wonderful event (family friendly, free parking, food, etc.) that offers a wide variety of music and dance. This year, of particular interest to this group might be Asani (native Cree/metis female vocal group from Alberta, Canada), Dominique Dupuis (Acadian fiddler from New Brunswick) and Michele Choiniere (Franco-American chanteuse from St. Albans, Vermont). With Michele will also be Rachel Aucoin and Sabin Jacques. A treat for all!

The festival runs Friday night at 6:30 through Sunday at 6:30 and many of these
artists will play 2-4 times during that period, so it is worth the drive. To see the website and hear sound slips of the performers, click this link.

The Beaudoin Project in Burlington (Vermont) this July 27-19

In the early 1970s, Philo Records released two albums by the "First Family" of Franco American music and dance, Louis Beaudoin and the Beaudoin Family, recordings that brought to the world the vital and vibrant musical traditions of French New England. The Beaudoin Project is a group of Beaudoin children, grandchildren and family friends who have reunited to celebrate the Beaudoin family's rich musical legacy. Together they bring the excitement, drive and passion of traditional Franco American music, song and step dance to this year's festival.

Playing the nightclubs of Caracas before relocating to New York City, this Grammy-nominated Latin dance band has released several discs on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. The sextet have been called "the Swiss Army knife of groove bands" for their ability to effortlessly blend disco, funk, space age music, acid jazz, bossa nova, hip-hop, electronica, and rock. Campy and retro, but with enough subtlety to elevate their music to the heights of "smirking international cool," a live show by these "invisible friends" is always a guaranteed non-stop party.

Forro in the Dark
Forro in the Dark is not your father's forró band. Supplementing the traditional instrumentation with electric guitars, an array of flutes, modern percussion, and other contemporary instruments, the group stylishly reinvents the popular Northeastern Brazilian music known as forró for the hipsters and club-goers of New York City. "Peppy, poppy, and impossible to sit still through," Forro in the Dark captures the immediate, pleasure-craving core of forró for modern audiences to relieve their stress on the dance floor.

DJ Dolores & Aparaelhagem
DJ Dolores burst onto the global club scene a few years ago with an explosive mixture of traditional northeastern Brazilian sounds with dance floor-friendly electronics, rock, and dub. Blending musical styles favored by the working classes with loops, breakbeats, street sounds, and live instrumentation, DJ Dolores, and his new live band Aparelhagem, create a musical cocktail both culturally meaningful and—most importantly—festive.

Also on hand for the evening is RNZ from the Listen Recovery Crew—a collective dedicated to recovering and archiving vinyl recordings from around the world—who will spin beats from Latin America and beyond.

Alasdair Fraser's Sierra Fiddle Camp in northern California invites you to a week of intensive study, recreation, and good times with people who share an interest in the music and dance traditions of Scotland and beyond. In 2007 camp will run from June 23rd to July 1.

Pascal Gemme (Quebec) will be teaching at the Sierra Fiddle Camp! Since the completion of his degree in big-band arrangements and classical and jazz guitar, Pascal has been searching for seldom heard songs and melodies and interpreting his own compositions with a unique, unmistakable style. Inspired to take up the fiddle by the playing of his grandfather, he developed a solid technique and acquired a wide repertoire through the years. He has played with and has been inspired by many great Québécois singers and fiddlers. He gave some master classes in the USA in recent years and since 2003 has taught fiddle in a folk music school in Montreal (École des Arts de la Veillée). Pascal is also a great singer of Quebec folk songs with a rich and interesting style and repertoire, mostly learned from older singers. Pascal does most of the arrangements for Genticorum and was also the arranger/composer for the show Chantier by Zeugma, a Québécois-Celtic-World dance company. He’s also working as a producer for different musical projects and a studio musician for commercial radio and television

Also, Tony McManus will be there!! He is from Paisley, Scotland. In a relatively short time Tony’s music has come to define a new role for the guitar in Celtic music. He has come to represent Celtic music in the guitar world, making regular appearances at guitar specific events where just a few years ago jigs and reels would be unheard of. He is now invited annually to the Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville, has appeared at Guitar Festivals in Soave and Pescantina, Italy; Frankston, Australia; Issoudun, France; Kirkmichael, Scotland; Bath and Kent, England; Bochum and Osnabruck, Germany and has taught at five of Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamps in Maryville, Tennessee. He recently appeared at the famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in the “All Star Guitar Night” featuring Steve Morse, Bryan Sutton, Muriel Anderson, Béla Fleck and Victor Wooten and headlined by the legendary Les Paul. In addition to his critically aclaimed guitar albums, he has released a much-loved joint CD, "Return to Kintail", with Alasdair Fraser.
