Salut bien!

Hi everybody!

A huge "Merci!" to everyone who came to our little traditional French-Canadian music and song party here in Concord on May 5. I'm attaching to this e-mail an article about it that appeared in our local weekly *The Concord Insider* as well as a link to the same article.

I say "little party" but that beautiful afternoon we were 44 musicians, singers, dancers and lovers of the French tradition in New England - not to mention the food! We had about enough to feed a small army, including delicious sugar pies and savory meat pies, all home made!

I'd like to thank too everyone who wanted to come but couldn't; you were there in spirit! Thank you for your encouragement and warm wishes. It's truly thanks to you all that the party was such a success!

Already we're planning the third party, which will take place the afternoon of Sunday, November 25 - three days after Thanksgiving - at the same place, the West Street Ward House in Concord. At the first party we were 25, and at the second, 44; who knows how many we'll be in November!

I thank you all once again from the bottom of my heart for your encouragement, you friendship, your being there and your warm wishes! Please share this message with your friends, family and coworkers, so that they know that our traditions continue to inspire people to come together to celebrate and sing our heritage!

I'll leave you on a word from Vermont accordionist and our friend George Dunne, who speaks for us all when he says, "My feet didn't touch the ground for a week with all the great tunes in my head"!

Cheers!

Hello, everyone!

I've read this story quite sometime ago, but I still think it's worthy to add a link here - Joshua Bell, the acclaimed virtuoso did an interesting experiment. He took his great, expensive violin - about $3.5 million - and went to a subway station in Washington DC to play it as so many musicians do in exchange of a chance to be discovered (and some money, obviously). Do you think you would stop to listen to Joshua Bell? Do you think you would notice the difference between a great talented musician and someone in need of more practice (or talent), if they are playing in the subway station close to you? Check this out.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Rock stars are often angry young men and Tico Santa Cruz is no exception. But the tattooed lead singer of the hit Brazilian band Detonautas has plenty to be angry about. His hometown of Rio de Janeiro is a city under siege, with more than 6,000 homicides each year. Drug factions fight for control of the shantytowns that dot the city. Stray bullets from their firefights strike down two innocent people every three days. What ticks off Mr. Santa Cruz the most is that so few people seem to care. So he now channels his frustration into rousing Brazilians from their apathy with highly visible, creative forms of protest. (...) "

Hello, everyone,

I've read this story and I know many of my Brazilian friends will identify themselves here. Although I'm not from Rio, as Brazilian I know many of these points are common knowledge and fact throughout the country. The frustration trying to promote changes, the increasing apathy and the violence, etc. I still get shocked when reading something as the comment in this story by the retired teacher... How can someone be apathic before the shocking tragedy that happened with a little boy this year that stopped the country? We need more people like Tico screaming for justice. Unfortunately we don't have many like him in the government...

...but hopefully she will be fine soon...

Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini. Description du programme

Salut bien!

Mark your calendars, mes amis! The time has come for a second edition of our very own capital city French-Canadian traditional music and song party! You are invited, Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., to the West Street Ward House, to sing, play, eat, laugh and be merry! Bring your favorite "chanson à répondre"! Bring your instruments! Bring something to eat 'cause it's potluck!

Entry is free, but donations to help defray the cost of renting the space are always appreciated.

At the first edition of our little homespun festival last November, we numbered 25, including guitarists, accordionists, a fiddler and bones player, a banjoist, a flutist, a tambour player, a spoons player, foot tappers, hand-clappers and many, many singers, coming from the Merrimack Valley, the Seacoast, from Maine and even Massachusetts.

Who knows how many we'll be this time? One thing's for sure, there'll be fun enough to go around!

RSVP to LaFranceLaPerse@gmail.com or 603-897-5182. Merci!
See you all May 5 at the old brick house on the corner!
