The Seventh Annual March Mandolin Festival will be held March 6-8, 2009, at the Concord Community Music School in Concord, New Hampshire. This year, the festival features Radim Zenkl, Seth Austen, Skip Gorman, and David Surette. This two-day event offers group lessons, and workshops on a variety of topics, jam sessions, and an evening concert. Additionally, the festival will present a March 6, Friday night concert featuring the same performers at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH (this is a separate ticket from the Concord events).

Performer bios

Radim Zenkl's virtuosity and innovation have placed him at the forefront of the modern acoustic music scene. Radim was born in the Czech Republic, where his father teaches classical music at the University of Ostrava. In addition to classical music, his early influences were folk music and Czech unique "tramp music". He began playing the mandolin at thirteen. Zenkl's choice of mandolin came as no great joy to his father, who claimed that the instrument had no "real" repertoire, fueling his desire to create one of his own.

Zenkl escaped from Czechoslovakia four months before the fall of communism for political freedom and to be closer to his musical influences. Once in America, he settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. After only a short period of time, Zenkl was performing at major music festivals and sharing the stage with artists such as Jerry Garcia/David Grisman, Tuck & Patti, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, David Grisman Quintet, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Tim O'Brien, Peter Rowan, John McCutcheon, Dan Hicks and many others. Zenkl went on to record two CDs for David Grisman's record label "Acoustic Disc". "Galactic Mandolin" (1992) is comprised of 13 original solo works, each in a different tuning. "Czech It Out" (1994) features original and Czech and Slovak traditional tunes on solo mandolin, mandocello and mandolin banjo. A new CD entitled "Restless Joy" was released in November 1999.

Seth Austen is a nationally recognized acoustic multi-instrumentalist, composing, playing, recording and teaching diverse styles from traditional Appalachian, Celtic and New England contradance music to eastern European Klezmer, Balkan, Nordic, bottleneck blues and jazz. Seth has been particularly involved in many American roots styles for 25 years and plays a wide array of stringed instruments, including the entire mandolin family. He has released several CDs and book/CD packages, and performs frequently with hammer dulcimer specialist and fellow multi-instrumentalist Beverly Woods. He also has the distinction of being a triple winner at the prestigious Walnut Valley National Flatpicking Championships, Winfield, KS, placing in fingerstyle guitar, mandolin and fretted dulcimer categories in 1981.

Skip Gorman is one of the leading teachers and players of Bill Monroe-style mandolin in the country, as well as being a masterful cowboy singer and fine fiddler. An encounter with Monroe at age twelve was a pivotal moment in the young musician's life, and he was lucky to have the opportunity to see musicians like Monroe, legendary Texas fiddler Eck Robertson, and Mother Maybelle Carter at the historic Newport Folk Festival. He has taught bluegrass mandolin at top festivals such as IBMA World of Bluegrass, European World of Bluegrass and Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival. He has released a number of fine recordings, including three acclaimed Rounder releases focusing on cowboy music, and two focused on "old-style" bluegrass mandolin. His most recent release is a two-CD set of mandolin tunes titled Mandolin in the Cowcamp.

David Surette is highly regarded throughout New England and beyond for his work on the mandolin, guitar (both flatpick and fingerstyle), and bouzouki; Sing Out Magazine wrote that "Surette's playing is always inventive, and sets a new standard for traditional instrumentalists." As part of a duo with his wife, singer Susie Burke, they have performed regularly together for 20 years, recording several albums and building a reputation as one of New England’s top folk duos. Surette was a founding member of the Airdance band with fiddler Rodney Miller, with whom he recorded four albums and toured nationally. His most recent solo release, The Green Mandolin, is a collection of Celtic tunes for mandolin and cittern. He is also an experienced teacher, and coordinates folk music programming and teaches regularly at the Concord Community Music School.

There are a number of quick and easy places to get lunch and/or dinner within walking or driving distance of the school, and parking in Concord NH is not a problem at all. We will assemble a short list of good options, and may try to provide an on-site sandwich purchase option. I am also planning to have coffee/tea and light snacks available for purchase at the school. There are basic kitchen facilities at the school, and you are welcome to bring a cold lunch or even something to heat up in the microwave.

In addition, we will get a second chance to play through the group tunes together.

The Annual Comhaltas "Echoes of Érin" concert tour of Britain crosses the water to Liverpool on Friday, February 20th. The tour takes in nine venues throughout Britain, from Liverpool to London, taking in the North of England, Scotland and Birmingham on the way. The final concert will take place in Cardiff on Saturday, 28th February. The Comhaltas concert tour now in its 35th year consists of a fine mix of established artistes together with up-and-coming young performers. These are blended into fast-moving and colourful concert of music, song and dance which appeals to both the connoisseurs and peripheral fans of Irish traditional culture.

The Tours showcase all that's best in Irish traditional music fifteen top class performers in all instruments have been assembled to display the highest standards and regional styles that have become synonymous with these events down through the years.

To continue their tradition of touring in the Canadian West, La Volée d’Castors will visit Manitoba on the 13th and 14th February. They will be offering various performances and workshops to the people of Manitoba as part of the Festival du voyageur.

[Press release] When three major talents combine in one musical group, great things can happen. Take the new Pioneer Valley-based Celtic trio, Mist Covered Mountains. Playing Celtic roots music from Ireland, Scotland and French-Canada, the trio takes a fresh look at old favorites, also penning tunes destined for the fiddling canon. Award-winning fiddler Donna Hébert delivers encyclopedically accurate styling, aided and abetted by groovemaster Max Cohen’s guitar rhythms. With Katherine First’s driving, brilliant fiddle (and her colorful cowboy boots!) kicking the group into overdrive, you’d better nail down the stage for this trio!

A 2008 Massachusetts Artists’ Fellow in the Folk Arts, Donna has a duo with Max and also plays with him in Franco-American heritage group The Beaudoin Legacy and old-time band Groovemama. With Groovemama, they perform and teach every summer at Old Songs and Philadelphia Folk Festivals, while with the Beaudoins, they are deeply involved in the Vermont-Quebec Quadricentennial celebrations.

Donna also fiddles and sings with Franco group Chanterelle, still going since 1993. Donna also co-founded Valley favorites Rude Girls in 1985, winning an Indie Award with them for their “Rude Awakening” Flying Fish debut. Her credits since include major U.S., Canadian and European festivals, residencies and conferences as well as anthology recordings on Smithsonian/Folkways. A pioneering fiddle teacher, “Donna gets it all right” says string legend Darol Anger in his introduction to her new “Fiddling Demystified for Strings.”

Katherine & Max’s duo has played many venues in the Pioneer Valley, including First Night 2008. Max not only performs with fiddlers Katherine and Donna, but also with folksingers Priscilla Herdman and Leah Kunkel as well as with Norman Blaine’s progressive rock band, The Authentix.

This year both Donna and Katherine released fiddling CDs. Donna completed the companion Fiddlejam CD to her pioneering Fiddling Demsytified for Strings, while The Beaudoin Legacy released a live concert CD, Une bonne soirée: Live at the Blackstone River Theatre. Donna has released ten other solo and band recordings.

Katherine’s new CD, The Sweet Spot, has been a hit at local performances. Additionally, when not on the road, she leads the Session at The Basement in Northampton. Says Valley Free Radio, “Katherine First delivers traditional tunes with finesse and firepower.”

Max’s solo guitar CD, Saltwater Color received lofty praise. Guitar For The Practicing Musician raved, calling Max one of the “most musically complete players we have seen.”

Trio members also play with other fine New England musicians who may show up on stage with the trio, including Nightingale piano and accordionist Jeremiah McLane, who plays with Max and Donna at Boston College this February 10th! Also joining the trio is Scottish multi-instrumentalist Dan Houghton from Vermont band Cantrip. Dan excels at everything from Gaelic and English songs to bouzouki to Scottish pipes, flute and whistle.

The trio is currently working on a demo and is booking performing arts venues in New England. Their media tracks are available on their home page.

The 49th University of Chicago Folk Festival will happen 6-8 February 2009.

Lisa Ornstein and André Marchand are featured performers at the evening concerts Saturday and Sunday, and will be presenting free (donation optional) fiddle, singing, and dancing workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday.

It's also a tradition for local musicians to bring their instruments and informally play music during the day.

Les groupes participants à notre 6^e édition ont été particulièrement généreux. C'est 28 disques que vous pourrez gagner cette année. Le concours est divisé en quatre semaines. Débutant le 18 janvier il se termine le 14 février 2009.

Chaque semaine, 7 disques seront tirés au sort parmi les participants ayant trouvé la bonne réponse à la question de la semaine. Il y aura un Grand Prix qui sera tiré le 15 février 2009 à 9 h parmi tous les participants.

Il consiste en:
Une nuitée le vendredi 20 février 2009 avec déjeuner pour deux personnes à la Maison Cheney située à St-Ours-sur-Richelieu avec deux billets pour les spectacles du 20 et 21 février 2009.
