I'm back from my trip to Quebec and with much to tell. Chants de Vielles festival this year surprised me with its increase in the size and quality. The organizers are doing a nice job and surely attracting more and more audience each year.

While out there, I had the opportunity to meet with my dear friend Benoit Bourque and learn about his new projects coming up. I'll be sharing this and more with you all, soon... I also had a great time enjoying the company of many of these Quebecois talents at a local pub, and I thank my friend Gaétan Morissette for the invitation!

Keep an eye for my new interview, this time with talented artist Eric Beaudry that talks about his projects with De Temps Antan and also with his brother Simon Beaudry.

Hi, everyone,

After a year performing mainly outside Portugal, the band Dazkarieh is preparing the group's 4th album to be released in the beginning of 2009.

This September the band will tour Poland while Germany will be their destination May next year. Dates and places are soon to be announced.

Depois de um ano marcado essencialmente por concertos fora de Portugal, os Dazkarieh preparam o seu quarto trabalho de estúdio a ser editado no primeiro trimestre de 2009.

Enquanto se forja o disco, a banda faz algumas experiências com novo repertório nos seus concertos.

Está já marcada uma digressão pela Polónia durante o mês de Setembro e na Alemanha em Maio de 2009.

Por cá, os Dazkarieh tocam este sábado, dia 30 no Castelo de Sesimbra pelas 21.30, a entrada é livre.

Huge congratulations are due to Andre Brunet, who last night won Ottawa's 2008 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Championship. Andre brought his traditional Quebecois style to this generally old time fiddle competition and knocked them dead.

It is great to see more of the wonderful musical traditions of Quebec being heard outside that province, and to finally see one of Quebec's astounding talents receive well deserved recognition.

Dans le cadre de Chants de Vielles se tiendra, vendredi le 5 septembre, La Nuit du Chant.

Cette assemblée tout à fait particulière aura lieu pour une deuxième année consécutive dans la grange aux chansons sur le site de l’exposition agricole à Calixa-Lavallée en Montérégie.

Cette soirée est une invitation à chanter, à répondre aux chansons ou tout simplement à écouter les chanteurs et chanteuses participants.

Cette année, Robert Bouthillier sera le chef d’orchestre de la soirée et seront présents notamment Charles Quimbert, Paul Marchand, Sophie Pomerleau, Éric Beaudry, Simon Beaudry, Simon Riopel, Samuel Riopel, les élèves du stage de chant tenu dans le cadre du festival ainsi que Jean-Paul Guimond.

En cours de soirée, on soulignera la présence de Jean-Paul Guimond, un illustre porteur de tradition en matière de chant traditionnel au Québec dont on aperçoit la silhouette au centre des personnages de l’affiche 2008 du festival. Cultivateur à la retraite, Jean-Paul a semé dans le cœur de bien des gens au Québec et en France, une passion pour la chanson traditionnelle. De nombreux chanteurs se sont inspirés de son répertoire et de sa manière de chanter.

Histoire de lui rendre un hommage sympathique, on invitera tous et chacun à venir lui chanter une de ses chansons. Une occasion en or de faire une chaleureuse accolade à Jean-Paul, ainsi que pour les auditeurs, de découvrir toute la richesse de son répertoire et la générosité du personnage.

Une soirée où vous êtes attendu.

Don Roy is one of the leading bearers of Franco-American dance music traditions in Maine. He learned the fiddle from his uncle, Lucien Mathieu, and went on to become Maine state fiddle champion. Founder and Director of the Maine French Fiddlers, Don Roy is a master teacher and fellowship winner of the Maine Arts Commission, teaching many younger musicians like Erica Brown. Lucie LeBlanc Ouellette, a talented singer from the St. John Valley, loves to play rock and country music. She grew up singing many of the traditional French songs of Acadian culture with her sister and mother. The Le Blanc family has always played music and sung together where their mixture of the traditional French songs and more recent French country-and-western are highly appreciated.

Marce Lacouture, whose musical career began in Austin, Texas playing folk and rock n' roll, shares her cultural heritage through song. In 1983, she began spending time with traditional ballad singers Lula Landry and Inez Catalon, learning the old unaccompanied songs of Louisiana French culture. Both Landry and Catalon have passed on but their songs remain alive through Lacouture's beautiful voice. In 2000, she recorded La Joie Cadienne, produced by legendary slide guitarist Sonny Landreth. Depuis seize ans, le festival La Grande Rencontre valorise les musiques et les danses traditionnelles québécoises dans un contexte urbain, liées aux autres courants des musiques traditionnelles, folk et du monde, inscrivant ainsi le festival dans le concept de la diversité culturelle relié aux sources de la musique québécoise en constante évolution. Pour l’édition 2008, du 8 au 10 août, La Grande Rencontre présente LE VIOLON DES PEUPLES, une invitation à la découverte de la vitalité du patrimoine vivant québécois en lien avec les artistes du Canada, des États-Unis, de Finlande, de Suède, de Norvège, d’Écosse et des Balkans, illustrant les styles et les traditions musicales d’ici et d’ailleurs. La Grande Rencontre propose également d’autres activités culturelles: des veillées endiablées, des ateliers de transmission animés par des porteurs de tradition, des classes de maîtres et des sessions de musique inoubliables. Nous poursuivons, pour une deuxième année, deux soirées de «showcase» traditionnels.

For sixteen years, in an urban setting, La Gande Rencontre has worked to bring recognition to and appreciation for the traditional music and dance of Québec. By linking it with the musical traditions of other cultures from around the world, the festival beautifully illustrates the cultural diversity and shared influences that help to keep traditional Québécois music in constant evolution. This annual festival takes place in Montréal’s beautiful Parc Lafontaine from August 8-10, 2008. For this 16th annual edition, La Grande Rencontre presents LE VIOLON DES PEUPLES (Fiddle for Folks), featuring a host of Québec and international artists. Featuring concerts, dances, entertainment and workshops, these dynamic performers and teachers will open your eyes to living music and dance traditions from here and afar

The group Vishten from PEI will play at the Dublin, Ohio, in the Irish Festival at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2008 and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 2.

Before the festival, the Dublin Irish Festival Academy offers classes for intermediate and advanced musicians. Instructors will include Grey Larsen (whistle and flute), Kevin Burke (fiddle), John Carty (tenor banjo), Ged Foley (guitar), and Cara Butler (Irish Step Dancing). There are also intermediate level classes in fiddle, bodhrán, and set dancing.

I know many of you are asking now about my interest in Bruno Kowalczyk. Well, when my friend Teresa grabbed me to participate in these harmonica lessons and I had no scape, I started to go after the tunes of my interest. Bruno's work brings Poland, Ireland, France and Quebec together. It's surprising, creative and fun... Believe me, you will love it!

Gadelle is a new four member, all woman, traditional Acadian band that is an evolution from the nucleus of Les Girls, the last musical project that former Barachois members Helene Bergeron and Louise Arsenault have created. Gadelle is an old Acadian word which translates as "wild berries" and also has a connotation of a feisty female. This new group's style of show is delivered with stylistic purity and the stagecraft that Barachois was known for. The four members of the group are: Helene Bergeron (from Barachois)- vocals, piano, pump organ, fiddle, foot percussion and step dancing; Louise Arsenault (also from Barachois)- fiddle, harmonica, foot percussion, step-dancing; Caroline Bernard- primary vocalist, piano, pump organ, accordion and guitar; Paige Gallant- fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bass and step-dancing. Caroline and Paige are in their early twenties and Helene and Louise are in their early 50's so there is an interesting cross generational dynamic which comes out in the context of the show. Gadelle members play with ferocity and stylistic conviction while putting on one heck of a show. A must-see show!
